Team Looks At Sub Claim

Sydney Morning Herald

AN EXPERT team, led by a state maritime archaeologist, Tim Smith, has been ordered to investigate a documentary filmmaker's claims that he has found the last of the three Japanese midget submarines that attacked Sydney Harbour in 1942.

The Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor, who is responsible for the NSW Heritage Office, acted quickly yesterday after Foxtel broadcast a 90 minute live news special, M24: The Last Sunrise, claiming the missing submarine had been found near Lion Island in Broken Bay.

Mr Smith confirmed that Mr Sartor had "directed the Heritage Office to undertake some further investigations of the target site", and that this would happen "at the next available weather window".

But Mr Smith said evidence by the filmmaker Damien Lay in the special was still inconclusive and required further authentication.
